Healthy Living in the Upper Keys – Part 2

When you live in a place where the weather is warm, the trees are always green, plants grow freely without much human interaction and the local tiny wild life are comfortable enough to call your yard home, it’s difficult to have a bad day. The exception to the above, is when the winds are out of the West and every mosquito with wings take flight!

Living in the Upper Keys for many also includes working here.

Not everyone who enjoys the ambience is on permanent vacation. However, there are those who do not have to work but choose to because they enjoy it and it keeps them lively. And if you have a strong enough love for fishing or selling real estate, you can obtain your captains license and from here on out be referred to as Captain so and so, and/or obtain your real estate license because those seem to be the most sort after professions here in the Upper Keys.

If that’s not your passion, there are other careers that will afford you a happy and healthy living. However, you may find yourself needing to be a little creative. And in order to be creative, you will benefit from a healthy positive attitude. No matter where you work to live, that goes without saying. Let me reiterate the operative words here; they are positive, happy, healthy and living. The order they are mentioned are on purpose.

Taking a positive outlook on anything in your life produces a smile and that can produce the feelings of happy. To be healthy both mentally and physically it definitely helps to be positively happy. Living is just that, it’s all the fore mentioned words and more.

Waking up in the early morning hours here in the Upper Keys, you’ll find people out walking, bicycling, running and a number of other activities whether the sun has risen or not. Why? Because those people are looking forward to their day, even if means dragging themselves up and out the door early to get their minds and bodies going. For those who just can’t get up super early, they put an effort in at lunch time or right after work to get some of that feel good exercise in. There is no secret formula for living the good life. It’s what you make of it. And what a fabulous place to do it in!

Add Healthy Eating Choices to Your Life

Now that you’re all fired up to get out there and move your body. How about some healthy eating choices to add to your life? Did someone say fish? That’s right, get your healthy, happy heart dose of Omega-3 fish. The Mayo Clinic says, “Omega-3 fatty acids may decrease triglycerides, lower blood pressure, reduce blood clotting, decrease stroke and heart failure risk, reduce irregular heartbeats, and in children may improve learning ability. Eating at least one to two servings a week of fish, particularly fish that’s rich in omega-3 fatty acids, appears to reduce the risk of heart disease, particularly sudden cardiac death.”

In the Upper Keys and throughout the Florida Keys, there is no shortage of fresh season year round and there are many choices to tickle your taste buds. Want to catch your own and have someone else prepare and cook it for you? No problem, most restaurants will gladly cook it for you (for a nominal fee of course).

If you take the time to look around the Upper Key islands and patron a local bar, restaurant or walk to your nearest neighborhood dock on the Bayside, at the end of the day, every day, you will be granted a most spectacular view; the Florida Keys sunset! There is no sunset like it. Even if you didn’t have a good day, the sunset will leave you with a positive outlook, a happy smile, a healthy perspective and a reason to love living here!

Remember, healthy living isn’t a long or short term goal. It’s a way of life, it’s a way of thinking, a way of being every day. Healthy living can lead to not only good health of your body but of your mind as well.
